Our client is a young, but market leading organisation that is undergoing an exciting digital transformation across its entire European business and key to this is to improve the management of their core data sets. They have a suite of existing and new business applications covering HR/Payroll/Finance/Practice Management/Expenses and our client needs to collate and structure data from these to enable the BI team to efficiently report (Power BI) on the performance of the business to senior management.

This means accelerating the standardisation of operational systems in practices, the creation of stronger tools for managing master data and developing their data warehouse to become the trusted, primary repository for financial reporting (both internal and, ultimately, statutory).

The Data Engineer (finance data) will be expected to fulfil many of the tasks traditionally covered by a DBA role in a cloud infrastructure environment, however cloud experience is not required for this role as the core business applications are “on premise” whilst the data warehouse is Azure. Therefore, this is a great opportunity to move more into cloud technologies but for now, strong SQL Server including T-SQL with DBA and ETL skills are required. Azure (such as Azure Data Factory) would be a bonus. A firm grasp of data management and data warehousing topics is required.

Within this overall brief, the Data engineer (finance data) will act as a subject matter expert in the onboarding and treatment of data from their group finance systems. They will liaise closely with Finance functions, such as management accounting, financial reporting, audit, and tax to ensure that they make available the right data, at a suitable quality, to meet their needs. As such, the role holder will be expected to be conversant with financial principles and the data challenges that come with them.

Responsibilities:

  • The Data Engineer (finance data) will be the primary technical authority accountable for the design and development of the technologies that underpin their data warehousing strategy, with particular reference to finance systems. Primarily, this means orchestrating feeds of data from source systems (HR, Accounting, Payroll, PMS, Expenses) to their Group data warehouse hosted in Azure, taking technical ownership of all parts of the extract-load-transform chain and ensuring suitable audit trails are in place to demonstrate the data are accurate.

  • The Data Engineer (finance data) works closely with the Data Architect to define the over-arching data management strategy.

Key Skills and Experience:

  • SQL Server DBA skills; Configuration, maintenance, backup, performance optimisation, creation of SQL stored procedures, table views, etc. Strong T-SQL

  • Relevant technologies in Microsoft Azure, such as SQL Managed Instance, SQL Managed Database, Azure Data Factory, would be a bonus

  • REST APIs, JSON and ETL technologies/protocols for moving data between systems.

  • Some exposure to business intelligence tools, such as Microsoft PowerBI, would be helpful.

  • Manipulation, audit and presentation of core financial data – including various ledgers, charts of accounts, exchange rates, period-to-date aggregates, in a data warehousing environment.

  • Agile/Scrum as well as traditional waterfall frameworks.

  • Jira to manage development tasks, burn down, testing etc.

  • Github, or similar code management and collaboration tools  a
